How to manage Addon Domains in cPanel

Essentially, domain names are how we organize all of the websites and pages that web users visit online. Addon domains allow you to host multiple websites in a cPanel account without purchasing a hosting plan for each domain name. The number of domain names you can host under a single hosting account depends on your hosting plan. To get the add-on feature on your cPanel, you need the Enterprise corporate hosting packages.

In this tutorial, we will cover how to add a new domain name to your hosting account, and how to manage your existing domains, as well as set up new domain names.

The Domains section of the cPanel comes in handy to help you manage existing and new domain names. This guide will cover everything you need to know about addon domains and how to create, modify or remove them from your hosting account. But first, let’s take a closer look at the features available in the section.

To add a new domain to your cPanel, follow these steps;

  1. Under Domains, choose Addon Domains.
  2. Fill in the new domain name under Create an Addon Domain.
  • The Subdomain and Document Root fields will populate automatically.
  • If you want an FTP account created automatically for this domain, check the box for Create an FTP account associated with this Addon Domain.
  • Click on Add Domain. You will get a confirmation message after the creation of the domain.

You can click on the File Manager link to see the folder created for the domain. The addon domain and the files for this website are under the folder name in the document root entry.

Once your domain is verified, the addon domain is added to your account and active after the domain propagation process.

Editing/Removing a Domain Name

In the Addon Domains section, there’s a Modify Addon Domain section. You can edit and manage your addon domains, set redirections, and delete domain names as needed from your hosting account.

  1. Click on the Addon Domains tab.
  2. Scroll down and find the list of addon domains in your cPanel.
  3. Next to the addon domain that you wish to remove, click remove.

While having multiple domains may not be necessary, it may be a good idea to purchase several domain names and redirect them to your desired domain name. Plus, if you need to host several websites that are not resource intensive, an add-on is a great solution. However, you should limit the number add-ons on your cPanel since the more they are, the more they will compete for server allocated resources.
